20th-21st June 2009 – The weekend started with the Cotswold’s classic airshow at Kemble, now a 2 day event. We arrived in the lunch break and were treated to the Red Arrows flat display as we held on the edge of the RAT (Restricted Airspace).
After our first Kemble display it was up the Seven Valley through the showers to Staffordshire for the Weston Park Model Show. The stunning showground and grass strip is in the middle of 1,000 acres of ‘Capability’ Brown parkland with a history dating back to the Domesday Book .
The highlights of the show were the large warbirds and vectored thrust Typhoon. For entertainment, the ‘Demolition Derby’ of a dozen warbirds models screaming around the park’s mighty oaks was unbelievable; almost a dual to the last one standing as in the 10 minute slot half the fighters were lost to the trees, the ground or mid-air collisions – complete with pyros!
Sundays weather brought more showers but the low cloud cleared in time for our midday display. After another transit south and we were back at Kemble where the Vulcan made its second appearance of the season, and helped attract record crowds of 21,000.
